Religious Education News
Our Religious Education program had a great start with an inflatable spacewalk that all of our youth enjoyed. Each month we will focus on one of our youth programs in greater detail. Our 2nd-to-5th graders will be using "Spirit of Adventure." This is for active children. While learning about UUs who have changed the world, children try engaging activities such as building a graham cracker cantilever (Frank Lloyd Wright, UU architect), taking apart a computer (Tim Berners-Lee, UU father of the Internet), dramatizing skits on the Civil War (Clara Barton, Universalist founder of the American Red Cross), and learning safety skills (Elizabeth Blackwell, UU and first woman physician). This teaches UU identity without the usual arts and crafts projects. It revolves around areas such as medicine, science, architecture, exploration and the web of life. Teachable moments about UU Identity in this curriculum are not meant to be memorization of the names of famous UUs. The famous people mentioned in “Spirit of Adventure” lived lives which exemplified a UU identity. In each lesson there is a quote or worthwhile insight that pertains to all of us.
